Abbotsford Convent, 1 St Heliers St, Melbourne, Australia Asia in Focus Asia is reshaping the modern world. Yet its rich artistic heritage and vibrant New Music scene is largely unknown in Australia. Forest Collective’s Ali Fyffe has curated a stunning program that brings into focus some of the region’s most powerful compositional voices, from Myanmar to Japan, China to Iran. Navigating Eastern and Western traditions, new technologies and challenges including state censorship, these exciting composers have found unique and original musical voices. With a program including Ravi Shankar’s raga imbued Sonata for Harp and Cello, Takemitsu’s transcendental quintet Rain Spell and Luo Zhongrong’s post-Cultural Revolution pentatonic serialism, Asia in Focus will open your ears to a region that is changing the world. Presented by Forest Collective & Abbotsford Convent, as part of Convent Live Friday 23rd (preview), Saturday 24th, Sunday 25th April
Abbotsford Convent, 1 St Heliers St, Melbourne, Australia Emo Phase Lots of people have an emo phase, Dan Thorpe's just lasted a bit longer. It's his thirtieth birthday, he's a concert pianist, but he still just wants to shred sad, queer bangers. Join Forest Collective and piano maverick Dan for a night of high energy, genre defying music for piano and ensemble, revisiting repertoire from the last ten years of his career, plus world premiere concerti by Cat Hope and Dan himself. Sunday 28th February Heide Museum, 7 Templestowe Road, Bulleen, Melbourne, Australia Midsumma Festival Join new music doyens Forest Collective on an adventure of deep listening as we explore the unique sounds of composer Diimpa in the lush surrounds of the open air. Diimpa’s rich sound world draws from lived experience as a queer, autistic, Aboriginal Gubbi Gubbi man and will take you on a sonic journey from darkness to light as you sit back and relax in the tree-filled surrounds of Heide Museum of Modern Art. Lead by artistic director Evan J Lawson, Forest Collective is a 15 piece chamber ensemble dedicated to new classical music. Lauded for unique and surprising performances, Forest Collective is one of Melbourne's finest new music ensembles, working across disciplines from pop music to the avant-garde, from opera to contemporary dance. Join Forest Collective as they weave together the beautiful minimalist looping music of Diimpa in a rich chamber orchestra sound. |

Abbotsford Convent, 1 St Heliers St, Melbourne, Australia Chlorophyll Forest Collective and emerging alternative pop artist Max Lawrence join forces to premiere an orchestral re-imagining of Lawrence’s debut EP, ‘Chlorophyll’. A conceptual song cycle exploring the process of spiritual and emotional healing, ‘Chlorophyll’ is a sonic journey encapsulating both darkness and light; about growing from pain and states of apathy and depression to ultimately reconnecting with ourselves and the world around us through music, love, and an appreciation for the beauty of nature. Allow us to wrap you in the warm and sumptuous melodies of Max Lawrence, as he leads you into the sun-soaked world of ‘Chlorophyll’, performed for the very first time with a 10-piece chamber ensemble conducted by Evan J. Lawson. Featuring arrangements by Alex Morris and Matt Hirst, this unforgettable evening of moving, dynamic and cathartic live performance is not to be missed. |

I'll be joining Ping-Wei for a saxophone night at the new location of The Saxophone Store in KL. Well, my saxophone is a toy this time, but it's still saxophone-shaped, so come hear me play it! Monday April 29th, RAW Art Space, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia SPIL (Serious Play Improv Lab) I'm back in KL again for a one-off improvisation night with the absolutely wonderful and accommodating team at RAW. It's kind of weird that this will be my first gig of 2019. In some ways my approach probably sounds the same, but on the inside I feel like a completely different person. |

Contemporary music outfit Forest Collective and cabaret artist Danielle Asciak bring to the fringe stage music by Warhol’s muse, model and musician Nico (and The Velvet Undergound). Led by founder, composer and conductor Evan Lawson, this ensemble will reconceptualise traditional instruments, voice, and intermedia with an avant-garde, punk rock sound to evoke Nico’s enigmatic song writing. Radical and raw, this is Nico’s life defined by songs they never played on the radio. Sunday 19th August, 6pm, Abbotsford Convent, Melbourne, Australia
Skin Deep The centrepoint of this program features a newly commissioned work, Skin Deep, composed by ensemble cellist and composer Nikki Edgar. This new work uses a graphic score comprised of beautiful colours, shapes and lines. This incredible work, exploring the body and longevity of musical ideas and sounds promises to delve below the surface and open our minds to new ways of experiencing music through graphic score and unconventional sounds. This performance also features new commissioned work by Chris Rechner, who we welcome back to the Forest Collective family with his musical composition, and USA composer Julie Herndon, who’s electroacoustic work has been described as "striking" and "blended to inhabit a surprisingly expressive space" (San Francisco Classical Voice). Silence Please! Is it also easy? If you look at another, this is something. But rice can only imagine. Atomic. Always pour hundreds of thousands of atoms, but at night. We yearn for a simple life but is anything ever really simple? Perhaps simplicity is just an illusion. Perhaps it's something we force ourselves to believe. Perhaps it makes it easier for us to ignore the things that we don't understand. Perhaps everything is really something. A door opens. Fingernails scratching on glass. A door closes. A coat hanger starts to sing. But none of that matters now. I'll sing a pretty little song. It's a simple life, right? Sunday 18th June, 9pm, KPR x Green Papaya Art Projects, Manila, Philippines
Asialink Arts Residency with Green Papaya Arts Projects then she falls down the road between lake poo in college art Too Childish, nasty water rushing out, just slip a step is tripped... halfsound and friends present 'Panda just touches this afternoon', a two-part performance of related experimentations: the investigation and expansion of the sonic potential of the deconstructed and modified saxophone through gradual disassembly and combination with other objects to produce ‘unsaxophonic’ sounds, and the generation of poetry from poorly translated Facebook status messages in foreign languages. 'Panda just touches this afternoon' is an exploration of the interactions and intersections between sound and language, between intention and interpretation, between the meaningful and the nonsensical. Sound and poetry are contextaulized within a performance where they are reduced to their basic elements and eventually reconfigured, creating a cycle of perpetual change where meaning is easily lost, examining the jarring mutuality between different languages and artistic practices, and the constant deconstruction and reconstruction to which the world is subject.
